YCIS Educators Series - How to prepare your child for top universities and a challenging, different future

YCIS is proud to present an educational webinar that we partnered with SCMP, as part of our YCIS Educators series. Let’s hear from our Co-Principal and Educators on how YCIS equips students with 21st century skills for their tertiary education and very first job.

The ability to thrive in remote work, quick adoption of technology, and a mindset of agility and resilience are critical skills students need to cultivate as they enter the universities. A holistic secondary education reinforces essential lifelong skills in students, such as research, writing, teamwork, communication, and attention to details.

In this video, you will gain a deeper understanding of:

  • Early University Preparation: The earlier the students start to think about their careers, the more likely they will be successful. At YCIS, our University Guidance Office provides career workshops, courses, and information seminars from Year 6 through to Year 13. We also offer one-to-one college planning support, which helps students compile the necessary materials required for university and college applications.

  • Advanced University Programme (AUP): The programme prepares selected students who will apply for renowned institutions and challenging subject choices, such as medicine and dentistry.

  • University Transition Programme: Using the period when our students had completed their exams and are preparing for university ahead, our programme helps them experience the difference between a university pedagogy and those used at the school.

  • Well-structured Curriculum: We focus on helping students make university choices. YCIS equips students with the skills and knowledge they need for their desired curriculums, including International General Certificate for Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

  • Essential Skills in the 21st Century: Through our Learning Community approach, our students develop collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills. These skills continue to develop their knowledge in the long term.

  • Project-based Learning: Through Project-based Learning, our students learn and apply the knowledge in their contexts. Students have to think about whether the Internet’s answers fit in with their projects’ context in their projects.

  • Learning Communities: In 2014, our CEO and School Supervisor, Dr Betty Chan introduced the Learning Community model. Our classrooms have been transforming into learning communities or flexible learning spaces. The learning communities facilitate the interaction amongst the students and teachers in dynamic teaching.

  • Online Learning at YCIS: Online learning is more than delivering courses and the curriculum. It trains up our students to continue with their learning when there are interruptions. We have some students in the classroom, and some online, they work together across time zones and use technology to manage their projects.

  • Parents’ Roles in making University Choices: There is a three-way partnership between students, school and parents. We suggest parents listening to their children what motivates and inspires them. Meanwhile, YCIS engages closely with parents through different platforms.

  • Global Mindset: YCIS offers a multicultural learning environment and aims to raise globally competent and compassionate leaders. We encourage students to look globally for their next steps and step out of their comfort zones.
