YCIS Educators Series - Gaining a Place at University - Key Strategies and Tips for Global Placements

YCIS is proud to present an educational webinar that we partnered with Top Schools, as part of our YCIS Educators series. Let’s hear from our Co-Principal and University Guidance experts on choosing the right pathway to university and beyond.

In the 21st century, students need to be adaptable and flexible and equipped with excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills. YCIS’s Project-based Learning approach and Learning Community model prepare students for success in an ever-changing global environment.

In this video, you will gain a deeper understanding of:

  • Early University and Career Guidance: Our University Guidance Office (UGO) provides career workshops, courses, and information seminars from Year 6 to Year 13. Early preparation helps students identify their career goals and focus on the skills and qualities needed.

  • Subject Selection: At YCIS, we respect students’ desire and aspiration. There is no specific drive to one subject. For example, if students have a passion for design or coding, whichever subject it is, we will invest much time and effort to ensure they enjoy their experience at YCIS and achieve their full potential. We want students to be passionate about learning.

  • Well-structured Curriculum: We focus on helping students make university choices. YCIS equips students with the skills and knowledge they need for their desired curriculums, including International General Certificate for Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

  • Essential Skills in the 21st Century: Through our Learning Community approach, students develop collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills. These skills help students to filter and validate the information, which are major challenges to students.

  • Project-based Learning: Through Project-based Learning, our students learn and apply the knowledge in their contexts. Students have to think about whether the Internet’s answers fit their projects’ context.

  • Learning Communities: Our Learning Communities provide students with a range of different vehicles to engage in project-based learning. It improves the interaction between students and teachers in a dynamic teaching environment and pushes knowledge development boundaries.

  • Moving Up Weeks: The last few weeks of the academic year, known as “Moving Up Weeks” where Year 11 students move on to IB Diploma Programme class and experience the course before the summer holiday. We developed a preparation programme to give students a month of Project-based Learning to prepare them for the new learning mode.

  • Mountaintops: We regularly invite parents to share and celebrate students’ learning in the classroom. This sharing opportunity motivates students to continue their education journey positively and improves parents’ understanding of their children’s goals and performances.

  • Regular Parent Meetings: There is a three-way partnership between students, school and parents. We hold group and individual sessions for parents and students. We inform parents about what stage their child is at and facilitate their discussions.
