Our Year 13 students Anna Suen and William Yu were awarded the YCIS Ball Hockey Players of the Year. Let’s take a look at how playing ball hockey has inspired them!

Anna Suen (Year 13), Girls Ball Hockey Player of the Year (2019-2020)

“Hockey is very physically and mentally demanding. When there is a risk of losing, relations between team members can get quite tense. I have learnt to trust my teammates to play their position and remain optimistic when I find myself in these situations. I know I am not the most skilled player on the team but I am skilled at reading the emotions of my teammates, and that is a skill that helps me be team captain. The mentality you have is very important in competitive sports. My team can be quite sensitive about their performance so members might sometimes put themselves down when there is really no need to do that. As captain, I always remind them they are in the team for a reason. If one person starts to feel low, then there can be a domino effect on the rest of the team. I try to remind my teammates of the importance of staying positive and, of course, to also have fun!”

William Yu (Year 13), Male Ball Hockey Player of the Year (2019-2020)

“When I first started playing ball hockey, I was more of a shooter and was not very good at passing the ball. I was mostly playing by myself but ball hockey is a team sport. My coaches taught me to look at the field, to take my time and change up the pace. As a result, I have been able to pass the ball a lot more. I have also increased my fitness and have been able to absorb more contact. Now, as a team captain, I also have to lead by example. If you want the rest of the team to work hard, then you have to work hard yourself. Commitment is key. If other players see you slack, then they will ask, “Why should I be putting in so much effort?” I have also learnt that though some students might not be the best player, you can tell they are the glue of the team. They keep the team morale up and that is important for the team chemistry.”
